How to Check if AI is Citing Your Website (Free Methods)

There is no Google Search Console for AI citations yet. Here are the manual and automated methods you can use right now to track whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude are citing your site.

One of the most common questions from marketers and SEOs getting started with AEO is: how do I know if it is working? Unlike Google Search Console, which shows you every query your site appeared in, there is no centralised dashboard for AI citation yet. Tracking requires a combination of manual testing and a few emerging tools.

Method 1: Manual query testing (free, 15 minutes)

The simplest method: open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini and ask the queries your target audience would ask. Note whether your site appears as a citation. Do this for 10-15 representative queries across your topic area.

  • Definition queries: "What is [your category]?"
  • Comparison queries: "[Your product] vs [competitor]"
  • Best-of queries: "Best [your category] tools in 2026"
  • How-to queries: "How to [thing your product helps with]"
  • Problem queries: "How do I solve [problem your product solves]"

Keep a simple spreadsheet: query, AI engine, cited (yes/no), your position in citations, competitors cited. Run this exercise monthly to track progress.

Method 2: Perplexity is the most trackable

Perplexity shows numbered citations alongside every answer. This makes it the easiest AI engine to track manually: you can see exactly which sources were cited, in what order, and for which queries. Start your manual tracking with Perplexity.

Method 3: AEO readiness audit (leading indicator)

Rather than tracking citations after the fact, audit your site for the signals that drive citation before they appear. A tool like CiteRank scores your site across the 9 signals that correlate with AI citation: schema markup, crawler access, E-E-A-T, structured content, and more. A score improvement correlates with citation improvement within 4-6 weeks.

Method 4: Brand monitoring tools

Mention, Brand24, and similar tools are beginning to add AI mention tracking. These tools monitor the web for mentions of your brand name, and some now include AI engine outputs in their monitoring scope. Set up a brand alert and check monthly whether your brand name is appearing in AI-generated content.

What to do when you find gaps

If competitors are being cited and you are not, the fix is almost always one of: missing schema markup, blocked AI crawlers, or content that is not structured as direct answers. Run a CiteRank audit on the pages that should be cited and compare the score to the cited competitor pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a tool that automatically tracks AI citations?

Dedicated AI citation tracking tools are emerging in 2025-2026. Some brand monitoring tools (Mention, Brand24) are adding AI mention coverage. For now, monthly manual testing across the four main AI engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini) combined with AEO readiness auditing is the most reliable approach.

How often should I check for AI citations?

Monthly is a reasonable cadence. AI citation patterns change when models update (typically every few months) and when you make significant content changes. More frequent checking (weekly) is only worth it if you have made recent AEO changes and want to measure their impact.
