Google AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience, or SGE) are AI-generated summaries that appear above the ten blue links for a growing range of queries. If your content is cited in an AI Overview, it sits above every organic result, including whoever ranks #1.
The catch: the signals that determine AI Overview inclusion are not the same as the signals that determine organic rank. A site that ranks #3 organically might never appear in AI Overviews. A site that ranks #8 with excellent structured data might be cited in every AI Overview for its topic.
How Google selects AI Overview sources
Google's AI Overview system draws from the broader web, not just the top 10 organic results. Sources are selected based on: relevance to the specific query, content authority and E-E-A-T signals, structural clarity (can the content be extracted into a summary?), and freshness for time-sensitive queries.
Crucially, Google has confirmed that AI Overviews can cite pages that do not rank on page one. The selection pool is wider (closer to the top 20-30 results) and the final selection favours structure and authority over raw keyword ranking.
The signals that matter most for AI Overview inclusion
- E-E-A-T: named authors, About pages, author schema with real credentials
- Structured data: FAQPage, HowTo, Article, and Organisation schema
- Content structure: direct-answer sentences at the start of paragraphs, clear H2/H3 headings
- Passage-level clarity: each section should be a self-contained answer, not part of a long narrative
- Domain trust: HTTPS, clean site architecture, no thin content issues
Allow Google-Extended in robots.txt
Google uses a separate crawler for its AI systems called Google-Extended. If this is blocked in your robots.txt, your content cannot be used in AI Overviews, even if Googlebot can index your pages normally.
Differences between AI Overview and featured snippet optimisation
Featured snippets and AI Overviews are related but different. Featured snippets pull a single passage from a single page. AI Overviews synthesise content from multiple sources. This means: (1) you can appear in an AI Overview without appearing in a featured snippet, and (2) AI Overviews are more likely to cite you if you have multiple relevant pages on a topic, not just one excellent page.
Write a dedicated "what is X" page for your core topic, separate from your homepage. Google AI Overviews have a strong preference for definition pages when answering "what is" queries.
