ChatGPT SEO: How to Optimise Your Site for ChatGPT in 2026

ChatGPT is now a primary discovery channel for millions of users. Here is what "ChatGPT SEO" actually means, what signals matter, and how to measure whether it is working.

"ChatGPT SEO" is increasingly used by marketers to describe the practice of optimising for citation in ChatGPT responses. The term is slightly misleading (ChatGPT does not have a ranking algorithm the way Google does) but the underlying concept is real: there are specific, actionable signals that increase the likelihood of ChatGPT citing your site.

How ChatGPT decides what to cite

ChatGPT uses two content sources. For queries that need current information, it uses web search (via a live retrieval layer called Browse with Bing or, in newer versions, a proprietary search layer). For queries within its training data, it draws on its learned knowledge. For citation purposes, the retrieval layer is what matters: this is where optimisation can have a direct effect.

The GPTBot access check

Before anything else, check that GPTBot is allowed to crawl your site. OpenAI has confirmed that blocking GPTBot prevents your content from being used in ChatGPT's retrieval-augmented responses. Many sites block GPTBot accidentally via wildcard rules in legacy robots.txt configurations.

robots.txt
# Explicitly allow ChatGPT
User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

# Also allow OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI search)
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

Content signals that drive ChatGPT citation

  • FAQPage schema: Q&A structure that directly maps to how ChatGPT generates answers
  • Definition-first paragraphs: passages that open with a direct answer are extracted most frequently
  • Organization and Person schema: signals that content comes from a real, identifiable entity
  • Topical depth: multiple pages on the same topic signal topical authority
  • External citations within your content: linking to authoritative sources increases citation confidence
  • Clear, conversational headings: H2/H3 headings that match the form of ChatGPT queries

ChatGPT vs Google: the key difference for optimisation

Google ranks pages. ChatGPT cites passages. This distinction fundamentally changes how you should write content. For Google, a long, comprehensive article that covers every angle of a topic performs well. For ChatGPT, each section of that article needs to work as a standalone, citable passage, because ChatGPT is not reading the whole article: it is extracting a 100-200 word section that answers the specific query it received.

Measuring ChatGPT citation performance

There is no ChatGPT Search Console yet. Measurement requires manual testing: ask the queries your audience would ask and observe whether your site appears. Do this monthly for your 10-15 highest-priority queries. Track in a spreadsheet: query, cited (yes/no), position, competitors cited. AEO readiness scores from tools like CiteRank provide a leading indicator: score improvements typically produce citation improvements within 4-6 weeks.

ChatGPT's citation patterns are not static. They change when the model is updated (typically every few months) and when your competitors improve their AEO signals. Run monthly query tests and quarterly full AEO audits to stay ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT SEO the same as AEO?

ChatGPT SEO is a subset of AEO. AEO covers optimisation for all AI answer engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. ChatGPT SEO refers specifically to optimising for ChatGPT citation. The signals overlap significantly, so optimising for one engine generally improves performance across all of them.

Does having a ChatGPT plugin or GPT help with citations?

Having a custom GPT or plugin does not directly improve citation rates in regular ChatGPT responses. Citations in standard ChatGPT conversations are driven by your site's content signals, not by your presence in the GPT store.

How much traffic does ChatGPT citation actually drive?

Direct referral traffic from ChatGPT citations is measurable but typically smaller than Google organic traffic. The bigger impact is brand awareness and trust: users who see your brand cited multiple times in ChatGPT responses are significantly more likely to search for your brand directly or visit your site when they see it elsewhere.
